About the Project
The Higher Education Sprout Project (HESP) – Tanzania is a youth-centered sustainability initiative designed to empower students and communities through climate education, environmental conservation, water sustainability, and sustainable agriculture practices.
The initiative is supported by Nanhua University through Taiwan’s Higher Education Sprout Project (HESP), which promotes student-led community engagement and sustainable development initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The project works closely with schools and local communities in Tanzania to provide practical environmental education, leadership development, and hands-on sustainability activities that inspire young people to become active change-makers within their communit
The Challenge
Tanzania continues to face environmental and educational challenges that affect sustainable community development. Climate change impacts, environmental degradation, limited awareness on water sustainability, and food insecurity continue to affect many schools and communities, especially in rural areas.
Many students have limited access to practical environmental education and opportunities to participate in sustainability initiatives. In addition, communities continue to experience challenges related to deforestation, unsafe water practices, and limited exposure to sustainable agricultural methods.
These challenges highlight the need for youth-focused environmental education programs that combine practical learning, community engagement, and climate action.
The Solution
The Higher Education Sprout Project addresses these challenges by combining sustainability education, practical environmental activities, and youth empowerment initiatives within schools and communities.
The project engages students through hands-on learning experiences that promote climate awareness, environmental stewardship, water sustainability, and food security. Activities are designed to encourage active participation, leadership development, and long-term community impact. The implementation model includes:
- Climate change awareness workshops
- Tree planting campaigns
- Water quality monitoring training
- Keyhole garden establishment
- Scholarship and career guidance sessions
- Community engagement and environmental education
- Student-led sustainability initiatives
Project Objectives
Climate Action & Environmental Awareness
Engage students in tree planting and environmental conservation activities to restore ecosystems and promote climate awareness.

Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture
Introduce keyhole gardens in schools to promote sustainable farming methods, healthy nutrition, and practical agricultural learning.
